1. Learn to surf

Gerroa Surf School

Learning to surf with your kids is a great way to have fun, bond and pick up a new skill. There are surf schools up and down the South Coast, each one offering lessons for all ages and abilities. From north to south, here are a selection of our favourites:

Pines Surfing Academy
The Illawarra: Wollongong, Shellharbour and The Farm (Killalea State Park), NSW
From $50 for two hours

Pines Surfing Academy is the longest-running surf school in The Illawarra region. They have friendly, professional instructors – highly trained in water safety, wave etiquette, board positioning and wave knowledge – who will encourage and guide you through your surfing progression. READ MORE > 

Gerroa Surf School
Seven Mile Beach, Gerroa, NSW
From $50 for two hours

Operating since 1999, Gerroa Surf School is based at Seven Mile Beach in Gerroa. They offer one-off private lessons that help set goals and structure teaching around your ability. They also offer two-seven-day-long surf camps, which include accommodation, catering and gear. READ MORE >

Currarong Surf School
Currarong beach, Currarong, NSW
From $40 for two hours

In the pretty town of Currarong, Sam from Currarong Surf School offers beginner and intermediate group sessions, as well as private and couple lessons. Broulee Surf School
Batemans Bay, NSW
From $50 for two hours

Family-run Broulee Surf School has been surfing Batemans Bay for over 20 years, led by Shane Wehner – a former world-ranked pro surfer and current Australian surfmasters champion. Alongside private and group classes, they run the ‘Surf Squad’ – a junior surfing development program for 6-14 year olds across two-four days, where your kids will learn to surf, make new friends, play games, and have heaps of fun in a safe, supportive environment. 2. Go fishing

MV Signa Fishing Charters

Head off on a South Coast fishing charter with Captain Roscoe of MV Signa Fishing Charters, where you can try your hand at reef fishing, deep-sea fishing, game fishing and sports fishing. Your vessel will be the 44-foot MV Signa (based in Kiama, but serving multiple destinations), with a full kitchen and bathroom on board. All prices include fishing gear, bait and licenses. They can throw in giant beanbags, a PS4, a Nintendo Switch, a popcorn machine and even a candyfloss maker for the ultimate entertainment experience.
